Zoomorphisms refers to having the shape, form, or likeness of an animal; the use of animal forms in symbolism, literature, or representation. The third in a series of miniatures, these are Fireflies. Walking home from a late class in university, I stumbled across a field of fireflies in the setting sun. It was a singular moment.
Colouristically, this piece features fluttertongued woodwinds, double bass harmonics, sul ponticello as well as fingered tremolos in the strings. Another effect is the amount of rhythmic stratification in this little piece. The piece has a 'whole tone' feel, even though it's atonal.
Rhythmic stratification, also called rhythmic polyphony, results when two or more voices move at different levels of rhythmic activity. Musically, this represents the fireflies illuminating in a kaleidoscopic, asynchronous manner. There's also a lot in the way of chittering, chattering and sympathetic punctuations; fireflies at dusk are amazing to watch.
