The Cycle Of Old People Anger Continues

22-Feb-2025 | 4:08 AM
I remember when I was a teenager and my parents, and other adults, trashing my interests, and my music in particular, using terms like "kids these days". I am happy to say I did not grow up with such an attitude. But sadly, a lot of guys on here did, and I wonder if they realize that they even more narrow-minded and hostile than parents were when we were all younger. Have you ever noticed sites this are dominated by grumpy old guys? I have. And they flock together into the Grumpy Old Man's Club and scoff at and jeer at anything that does not conform to their narrow perception of music. There is hardly ever anyone under forty even, and if they come aboard they jump ship pretty fast. The attitude, if you do not know, is called rockism. Huh? What is rockism?

"Rockism" is an attitude that privileges classic rock music (late 60s to early 80s), particularly its perceived "authentic" forms, over other genres, especially pop, hip-hop and rap. It often involves a belief that classic rock represents artistic integrity and genuine expression, while dismissing pop, and other expressions,  as manufactured and shallow. This viewpoint is considered negative because it fosters a narrow, exclusionary perspective that devalues diverse musical forms and the artists who create them, often based on subjective and biased ideas of "authenticity." It can also lead to the dismissal of music that is enjoyed by large groups of people, and therefore creates an elitist view of music.

Of course, they do see themselves as elitists, rather as a select few chosen to safeguard the truth. They have a god even, and his name is Dewey Finn.
