Song information
Recorded the acoustic guitar for this one in 2011. Before I could finish the song my Mac crashed and burned. Finally got around to finishing the tune in 2022.

The theme herein is not unlike that of my June posting of “Tunnel Vision:”

https://ibandstand.com/songs/1942

I occasionally try to write and record something outside my usual folk-rock/classic-rock/progressive-rock comfort zone.

This is my first and only attempt at doing a Rasta-style tune. Whether, or to what extent, I did or did not succeed, I leave up to you… the listener.

That being said, I had a lot of FUN doing this one!

Be well all!

Lyrics
HUMBLE HAT

I.
Him shoutin' “Dis is dis!” an “Dat is dat!”
Him wield de word like was de baseball bat.
Him verbal arsenal alway up to stat.
If you engagin’ him, he lay you flat.

All dat he care about are bein' da right.
Him everyday be spoilin' for da fight.
Him push against da trut’ wit all his might.
Him inner darkness keep him so uptight!

Bridge:
Den come da light of grace;
shine from da inna’ space...

Him hear da holy dove!
Him heart discover LOVE!

II.
Him now a different man dat plain to see.
Him discover da humanity.
Him love da fellow, try to do de right:
replace da argument wit clear insight.

No longer care only 'bout bein' da right.
He face da “demon,”—put dat ting to flight!

Him sit an smilin' like de Cheshire Cat...
Now he be wear de mo' humble hat!
Dees day he wearin' de mo' humble hat!

Yah!

Even if you tried to get out of your comfort zone, I think you're still in :-) Or not too far... Anyway, I understand the pleasure you had.

Oh I love the clever lyrics. Fantastic arrangement. Cool guitar sounds. Layered but we hear then individually still. Super difficult to do in a mix. Great overall sound in the master.

Love it ! And i agree with Garni : Tom Petty comes to mind (probably more than rasta...). The guitars sound so good. Great listen, as always.

Thanks Al. Actually, it was my own former condition I was singing about. I used to be a cocky, sarcastic know-it-all who loved to argue. Then one day it happened... I grew up. LOL...

Hey Thierry, you're probably right.
It's damn near impossible it seems for me to get out of my comfort zone!
I still enjoy trying once in awhile.

Thanks man! First time I've gotten a Tom Petty comparison here. Don't mind that one bit!

Ah Kenneth! You noticed the layering. One acoustic and three electric guitars. I'd never attempted that before and they were a BEAR to mix! Glad you enjoyed this one!

@Dyl
Hey Dyl, I think you're right. This did NOT start out to be an attempt at rasta. I wanted to sing it like I usually do, but no matter what I tried I couldn't make anything work. Then I tried speaking the words a couple different ways. Finally settled on the rasta approach. Altered the lyrics and this is how it ended up. If it sounds a little like the late great Tom Petty it's purely accidental, albeit fortuitous!

Many thanks Matt. As for the "rasta" style singing... I was truly winging it. I've only heard this type of speech on TV and in movies. LOL...

This has kind of swamp blues rock appeal to it with the guitar. Very unique concept.

Hi Joyce. I get what you mean... A couple folks have felt a Tom Petty connection. Perhaps some early post-Byrds Roger McGuinn is lurking about in there as well? ("Lover Of The Bayou"?) A least in spirit...
Anyway, I had fun building it all up over the acoustic guitar piece I had recorded some seven years before.

A bit of Dylan and Tom Waits! This took me to a different world...I get the Native American vibe here! Excellent work, my friend! BTW, just finished my draft of my book...so rewarding myself tonight! This is good stuff! A bot of a cheeky song!

Hey Stan, congrats on completing your book!
As for the song, I didn't realize some of my Native American ancestry leaked into this one till you pointed it out!
Glad you enjoyed this. Have a great celebration my friend!

Thanks Mary. As for "dabbling," I certainly try, but as Thierry correctly pointed out, I don't really get too far off from my usual approach. Still I do enjoy the trying! Lol...

Hey ! Cool tune ! Definetly a different approach on the vocals but great lyrics as usual. On a side bar...you've earned yourself a trip to the islands maan so you can work on that accent...lol
