This one is a rock ballad which loosely draws upon three
pericopes of Homer’s ODYSSEY.

Platonists—both Christian and Pagan—have long read the
story of Odysseus as an allegory of the struggles of the
spiritual journey.

Verses 1 & 2 draw upon Book IX: 82-104
—Herein “the Lotus Eaters” represent the drug culture.

Verses 3 & 4 draw upon Book IX: 105-565
—Herein “the Cyclopes” represent reductionist/materialist
philosophies.

Verse 6 & 7 draw upon Book V: 1-269
—Herein “Kalypso’s cave” represents sexual temptation.

It’s a little self-indulgent perhaps, but I hope some of you
can enjoy this one.

Be well my friends!

:-)

PS: No relation whatsoever to Christopher Nolan’s cinematic monstrosity!

Lyrics
ODYSSEY

I
On my long journey home
I came upon
the place where the Lotus eaters play.
They fed me with the fruit of forgetfulness
and they told me
that’s where the truth lay.
And I came briefly under their sway…

II
…but I watched them fall down
one by one,
as the light in their eyes went dark.
I began to feel my own self slipping away,
and I knew I was missing the mark.
It was time once again to embark…
for home.

III
At length
I found myself surrounded,
by the one-eyed reductionist horde.
They tried to devour all my hopes and dreams,
with the philosophies upon which they gorge;
but they struck a dissonant chord!

IV
And I watched them
as they led their lives,
without meaning… void of hope.
Their loudly professed ”realism” proved
nothing more
than a hangman’s rope.
So I turned away
from that slippery slope.

V
I sail upon a stormy sea
where countless dangers lie;
in search of peaceful harbors
where I can rest awhile…

VI
Of all the temptations I’ve encountered,
as I journeyed on my way.
None was quite as alluring,
as the sight of Kalypso’s cave…
but she lives only to enslave…

VII
Well she held me distracted and captive,
—a prisoner of her many dark charms;
but I soon realized there was death in her eyes,
and I knew she meant my soul harm.
It was time once again to move on…

VIII
The star I that follow shines brighter,
than the sun on a mid-summer’s day.
It lights up my perilous path homeward,
as I continue on my way.
Tomorrow’s another day…

a thoughtful tale. and a nod to the past story tellers!
you reminded me that most story tropes of today all came from ancient, ancient writers. the true classics.
also i really like how you effected the voice in V. it works as a break in the plot. very cool!
thanks for posting this. i enjoyed it

Many thanks Danny boy! I've read the Odyssey several times over the past two or three decades. I've always wanted to do a song based on it. So glad you enjoyed it my friend!

I deeply appreciate the kind review Joseph. They say you can't go wrong with good material. I'm not sure that is always the case. I'm glad you think this attempt turned out OK!
Be well my friend!

We've both been at this a long time Bill. It warms my heart to get a nice review from someone I've always liked and respected over the decades since the early days of MacJams.

Each one of us is on an Odyssey from birth to death to what comes after. That to me is the essence of this ancient tale.
I'd been working on this piece for a few months. When you posted your Odyssey piece I had only just heard about the movie. Then you got beautifully covered by Dan the man. Seems like we were all on the same wavelength!
Anyway I'm glad you enjoyed this.
I've been working on a CD of music called COMPASS since late last July. I'm currently putting the finishing touches on the last two pieces of that 17 track project. After they get posted I'm taking a break from writing and recording. I'm exhausted!
I'll still be listening and commenting here though.

Another great journey Mike.  You got quite the imagination and got the ability to deliver what goes on in your head.  That's amazing.  What I love most is that every minute of your songs will throw in something new.  Loved it.

Thanks Matt. I'm glad you find my tunes interesting. Most bands I listen to---and have long been inspired by---should get the real credit though. I'm just trying in my own modest way to follow in their footsteps.

Thank you Don!
Actually the music almost always comes first, and the lyrics come later in the recording process; after the rhythm guitar and keys, but before the drums are finished and the lead guitar and bass are added.
My ideas for lyrics are usually evoked by how the music makes me feel. Then a phrase or two pops into my head and I just run with it. I trust my instincts and it tends to work out.
Just so ya know ...

Glad you like it bro. Several months ago I got a Yeti microphone. I think it has improved the sound of both my acoustic guitar and my vocals.

Hello there.   This song is top notch.    Vocals and music are super cool, as well as the song as a whole.   The ambitious lyrics also strike a chord with yours truly, as I've always leaned towards more celebral type music.    Fantastic epic.   You rocked this one.

Glad you like it Shaun. Soundtrack? Perhaps if Musk makes a better version of Homer's epic tale. If Nolan were to use it I would sue...
