When I was a kid I loved the Saturday morning 30 minute cowboy tv shows. My favorite was Roy Rogers and his Wonder horse, Trigger. Then I discovered the Excitement of Jazz and both provided me with many hours of Enjoyment and cool dreams in my little world!!! “On The Trail” was written by Ferde Grofe in 1931 that was in his five-movement synphonic suite “Grand Canyon”. This song appealed to Jazz musicians due to its structure, harmonic possibilities, and distinctive rhythmic elements, which lent themselves well to improvisation and arrangement. Ferde Grofé himself was a highly influential jazz arranger for Paul Whiteman's orchestra, orchestrating George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, among many other hits. Renowned jazz artists like Joe Henderson, Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, Jimmy Heath and Ahmad Jamal have all performed and recorded versions of "On the Trail," demonstrating its lasting appeal within the jazz community.
