"Never the twain shall meet" comes from Rudyard Kipling's "The Ballad of East and West" . It opens with the line about East and West never meeting.
"Twain" is an old word for "two." The phrase means two things are so fundamentally different or opposed that they can never be reconciled or brought together.
Ironically, Kipling's poem actually goes on to argue the opposite - that despite geography and culture, two strong individuals can meet as equals.
Today it's mostly used loosely to say two people, ideas, or groups will never see eye to eye or find common ground.

Lyrics
NEVER THE TWAIN SHALL MEET
by Gerald G ©Copyright 2026

Verse 1

Across the border rode a man beneath the burning sun
Another followed close behind, with pride and loaded gun
They had been taught that blood and land would make them enemies

Two distant worlds divided by old lines no eye could see

Chorus

They said the East is East, the West must stand apart

But no border can divide the courage of the heart

When two men meet as equals, every wall must fall

Never the twain shall meet, until they hear each other’s call

Verse 2

Through broken stone and desert dust, the chase went through the night

Neither man would turn away or surrender from the fight

But when one fell, the other reached and pulled him from the ground

And honour spoke between them without ever making sound

Chorus

They said the East is East, the West must stand apart

But no border can divide the courage of the heart

When two men meet as equals, every wall must fall

Never the twain shall meet, until they hear each other’s call

Instrumental

Verse 3

They faced each other eye to eye, no master and no slave

Two men judged by what they gave, the choices that they made

The world may draw its boundaries and teach the heart to hate

But respect can cross the distance and leave fear outside the gate

Chorus

They said the East is East, the West must stand apart

But no border can divide the courage of the heart

When two men meet as equals, every wall must fall

Never the twain shall meet, until they hear each other’s call
