Where Music Meets the Cosmos
I'm Gerald - most people know me as Garni. I'm based in Melbourne, and my two great passions are music and astronomy. Somehow those two things have always felt connected to me.
My Musical Journey
I play keyboards, drums, and a bit of guitar, which has led me into a few synth-based bands around Melbourne over the years - LegRoom, AquaFuz, and Violator (a Depeche Mode tribute band).
My sound is pretty firmly rooted in '80s new wave. Depeche Mode are a huge influence, along with Gary Numan, Kate Bush, Ultravox, The Human League, Yazoo, Duran Duran, David Bowie, Peter Gabriel, and Björk. That era had a way of making synthesisers feel genuinely emotional, and that's something I've always chased in my own playing.
Stargazer and Scientist
When I'm not making music, I'm usually outside looking up. I have my own observatory, and I use it both as a hobbyist and in a more professional capacity - it's become a pretty central part of my life.
My main area of interest is supernova remnants: the debris left behind after massive stars explode. There's something about studying those events - light and energy that's been travelling for thousands of years — that feels related to what draws me to music. Both are about finding meaning in waves moving through the dark.
