Song information
Alright y'all. Here's some food for debate. This is a song I wrote with a little contribution from some old bandmates. I previously released a version of this song here. Recently, I finally "bit the bullet" and tried out Suno. Suno helped me bring this song to what it was perhaps always meant to be. I took my extremely developed track and uploaded to Suno and it took quite a few tries but it eventually gave me the soundtrack used in this. It let me strip it's AI vocals and I recorded these vocals today in my studio. What are thoughts here on AI music?

Lyrics
You are made in God’s image
The only first hand witness
It’s not a competition
Your love is soul food, so you, so nutritious
It’s true
You’re one in a million
Matter fact more like one in 8 billion
And I promise you it’s more than a trope
If your heart’s in tug of war
Please just let go of the rope

Ah shit, the bills are stacked up to the ceiling
On the other hand having a roof is a good feeling
And I know all things will work out God willing
One. Two. We delivered. Three in the womb chilling.

If you think you’re running out of time
Already past your prime
Close your eyes and breathe in life
And now look across the sky
Rest the tension in your mind
Set the past aside
Feel your spirit come alive
Open your arms wide and say

It’s the best decade of my life
It’s the best decade of my life
It’s the best decade of my life
It’s the best decade of my life

Ah shit, COVID hit
And post-hysteria, we can’t get over it
Call it a bad case of the rona blues
Airborne and spreading in the news
They all say they know just what to do
But nobody has a fuckin clue
And the fear is gonna get you too
If you let the mask become a part of you

And all the talking heads floating lies
And since it’s all cap, it capsized
And now we’re communicating underwater
States apart from our sons and daughters
Serving kings and queens on private charters
Swiping feeds, praying for martyrs
Pop cults went so outta whack
So far, it brought The Bible back

If you think you’re running out of time
Already past your prime
Close your eyes and breath in life
And now look across the sky
Rest the tension in your mind
Set the past aside
It’s your time to come alive
Open your arms wide and say

It’s the best decade of my life
It’s the best decade of my life
It’s the best decade of my life
It’s the best decade of my life

I remember the days people clapped when pilots landed
When we asked for respect and didn’t demand it
When hope was abundant and not reprimanded
When no one was left on the side of the road stranded
When not everything created was bought, sold, and branded
Sometimes in this new world I just can’t stand it
But when things aren’t the way that I planned it
There’s no time to waste

It’s the best decade of my life
It’s the best decade of my life
It’s the best decade of my life
It’s the best decade of my life

@Moses  This is quite an interesting post and song and question... So i downloaded both versions and listened carefully. First things first : we know - from previous uploads - that you're a truly gifted musician and songwriter (and singer). In terms of creativity, you're probably the last person that really needs Suno or any other AI generated stuff. But you did it, as an experiment, and it's cool we get to compare with both versions. I understand how frustrating it gets sometimes when the sound we have is not close enough to the one we dream of, or expect, for a specific style or song. The first version has a thinner sound, some bass could be added, drums could be stronger, maybe...
But... There is some dynamic into it. Something happening between the guitar and your voice, that gives all the power to the tune. The Suno soundtrack is more full and complete, more pop, your (human real!) vocals are really good... But - to my ears - as pro as it sounds, the 'intent' is not as strong. I can't explain why and it's only my humble opinion.
Some quick-therapy ? Yes : I guess AI 'in theory' contradicts directly my old punk days motto (do it yourself, even if it sounds like s**t). But this particular case is some proof to me. I'd take any not-so-perfect recording over some perfect - or so called - music, because it sucks the life out of everything. And you're absolutely not responsible for it. It's Suno.
Last but not least : there is some wonderful lines in this song. Last verse is totally great. Anyway : you asked for comments on AI, that was mine ! Suno or not, this is a really good song.

@Dyl Thanks for the thorough and thoughtful reply Dyl. I had the same experience listening to my past drummer's new band practice and then a Suno version of the lead singer's song. It was a reggae band and the Suno version reminded me a ton of an Argentinian band I like called Los Cafres. It was pop and polished, but I much preferred the rougher performances and recording of the live band practice, because I could hear the humanity in them. I could hear truth. This experiment changed a little of that in that the vocals were not AI. I thought maybe this utilizes the time and energy saving that Suno offers to get the music "bed" to where it needs to be, while not losing the authenticity/truth because the vocals are live. But perhaps, to sing to the Suno track is to live in the Suno world which is detached from the human experience because it is not human. And so even the live vocals aren't connected to the truth of now. It's interesting to think about no doubt and I've long had my doubts about editing in general and the extent to which music tech obfuscates truth and damages and misleads culture.

@Moses  totally agree with you about the vocals. I have a VERY hard time with synthetic/AI vocals, even the best (when tone and texture are super-well made). And it's not only because we 'need' to hear little mistakes, little out-of-tune or out-of-sync.. there's something missing and we can feel it ... might we call this the soul, maybe ?

I listened to both versions and I prefer the original as it has a distinctive guitar sound and a drum kit that sounds like a drum kit and not a collection of samples. The vocal sounds like a complete take without the use of comping and autotune.
Suno has put an AI sheen on the backing which is easily spotted. It is working with some very generic guitars, pads and an obligatory “felt piano” and has assembled the components in a predictable way and applied some effects to expand the sound. On the plus side it has introduced breaks, dynamic contrasts and fills that were not present in the original. We are spared the Suno vocal which I imagine was very synthetic.
In theory a producer could have taken the original recording, added overdubs and edits and remixed it to get it up to a standard for commercial release, but this takes time and effort. Suno now markets itself as a DAW and is counting on artists using it as a production shortcut.

@zincshed thanks for the input!! "spared the Suno vocal" made me laugh out loud.  To me, this experiment has landed me in the "I'm going to do it myself" box.  But as you said, dynamically Suno probably made some improvements to the song.  So perhaps it can be used as an idea feed when nothing is coming.  When Suno spit out this track, I was drawn to it because overall the arrangement felt better, although, I like my original bridge better.  I think too, not only are the tones pretty generic as you say, they are kind of lacking energy in a way.  Faded perhaps.  Everything just feels a little devoid of LIFE.

Also to your point, the original was a one take vocal.  Effects were triggered while singing live through Voicelive Rack and a footswitch.  The SUNO version was mostly one take but with a few comps and added stacked harmonies.

Thanks for taking the time to listen and provide some solid feedback.  Much appreciated.

Its crazy what AI could do these days. Music has changed and the relationship between musicians and fans has also changed. Like @Dyl  said, I prefer rougher music with an edge as opposed to perfectly produced pop music therefore I like the original better.  This version is a great composition, perfectly sung and is a great song but I don't care who's behind the singer but I do in the original.
I really can't talk because I'm not a musician and if it were not for technology where I can copy amd paste I probably would not be on this site.

Interesting story here.   Just a few days ago, my wife and I went to the South Bay area of Los Angeles to vacation, which is where I lived between the ages of 15 and 23.   As I saw all the old places again, I couldn't help think of some of the not so great choices I had made during what could have been considered my prime of life period.   I didn't get into drugs or heavy drinking or anything like that,  but I still think there were some things I could have done  or handled better.   So, this song really speaks to me and lifts me up.   It's done great with fantastic vocals and production.   Many thanks for this one.

I really enjoy when a band/artist creates multiple versions of a song - sometimes there's more to be explored in a tune than can be contained in a single rendition. It's really interesting to hear how the mood and character of a song can be altered by differences in instrumentation, tempo, dynamic changes etc. In any event, I really enjoyed both versions of your song, and am glad that both exist. There's a certain uplifting energy to the Suno version, though the instrumentation sounds "airbrushed" if you will, whereas the human instrumentation and emotional edge to the original is quite compelling.

@TrebleFace thanks for checking out the tune man.  The insight about not caring who's behind the singer is great.  I recorded with a songwriter who hired me to work on a bunch of songs for years and that's the way he tended to approach it.  If he couldn't envision someone playing the instrument then he didn't like it.  Appreciate the feedback.

@Venturesome cool story, LA is where I (like many others) chased my music dream and relate to seeing all the old places again, reflecting.  Thanks for listening to my tune and glad you enjoyed it.

@Amateurhour  I like your word airbrushed, that's a great word for what it feels like listening to the AI music.  I'm going to experiment with trying to combine elements of both, pulling the beat and maybe some textural stuff like swells from the stems from the AI, but do most instrumentation myself to the AI beat.  Personally I like the AI beat and arrangement.  Anyway, thanks for listening and for the feedback!
