"Metropolis Noir"
Continuing my conceptual "Art Deco Trilogy" of songs paying tribute to the influential 1927 German expressionist film Metropolis, "Metropolis Noir" explores the darker side of the iconic city's dual nature.

While the art deco architecture portrayed in the classic movie exhibits an outward magnificence and grandeur, there is also an underlying current of oppression, brutality, and societal dysfunction bubbling beneath the surface.

For "Metropolis Noir," I wanted the music and lyrics to capture and revel in this grittier, seamier underbelly contrasted against the city's majestic facade. Pounding industrial rhythms and gritty, processed vocals convey a sense of urban decay lurking in the shadows of the gleaming metropolis.

The song embraces the noir atmosphere and embraces the sinister duality - the harsh machine-age dystopia coexisting with art deco beauty. While I typically avoid featuring my own vocals, for this part of the trilogy I've made an exception, putting my voice through some vocal effects to create a more mechanized, dehumanized sound fitting for this dark narrative.

By holding up both the light and darkness reflected in Metropolis' iconic art deco towerscapes, "Metropolis Noir" aims to fully encapsulate the complexity and contradictions present in this quintessential cinematic city.

Metropolis Noir
Lyrics: Gerald G (Garni)

Verse 1:
Gleaming spires of steel and stone
Metropolis, this art deco throne
Glittering facade but inky shadows roam
Progress mixing with urban doom
• The Accidents
• Nitrous Scent
• Strangers Sin

Pre-chorus:
After the twilight, see its pulse ignite (tonite)
Cold industrial might under neon lights
This concrete behemoth, alive at night (ignite)
Where angels and demons unite

Chorus:
Metropolis noir, city of duality
Metropolis noir, revel in its brutality!
Decadence and decay, bittersweet symphony
Seduced by its grime and perversity

Intrumental----

Verse 2:
Titans of industry rule the dynastic heights
While the Underground drowns in vice and blight
Urban ocean and its tidal flow
Of humanity's struggle and existential woe

Chorus

Outro:
Metropolis noir, city of duality
Metropolis noir, revel in its brutality (bru tal it tee)

How you feel about Metropolis.
The stark pulsing rhythm and bald harmony recall 80s Synth bands but I don't think any of them took this project on.  I am anticipating the third number, where all this is revalued.  At least that's my hunch.
