When I was a boy I asked my father what he wanted to be when he too was young. "A conductor." "Of a train?" "No", he smiled… (He owned a small luncheonette on Columbus Avenue in NYC a few of blocks from what would be one day become Lincoln Center)… "I wanted to be the man who stands before an orchestra and leads them to make music." He was 13 and alone when many, many years ago, he came to America, from a poor farm on an island in Greece. He never had a hope of doing anything remotely like that but he always loved music especially Opera and Classical. We had a little spinet at home and whenever I opened it and begin to tinker around the keys he would quietly watch and I’m sure believed that in some way his dream lived on in me. He died many years before I would slowly begin to realize and create music, but I want to believe he would have liked some of that music and perhaps especially this short work dedicated to and named after him.

Music calls some people, doesn't it? It certainly called me. I recall being five or so and drawn to a piano at a neighbour's house. I was not born into a musical family, but I pursued it. Well, it pursued me, is more like it. By high school, I was playing in the local community orchestra, and I studied Music at university. I played professionally. I took compositions lessons. I had the full experience. I was lucky. My parents didn't understand it, but they supported me. I ended up teaching music to a generation of students, taught myself piano and in retirement, I'm teaching myself acoustic guitar. A lovely story to share, Charlie and the music resonated with me as well. It's quite stoic and 'Coplandesque'. I suspect your father would enjoy it too!
@soulima I’m glad you’ve also given us a glimpse into your journey to music. For you the journey seems clear. Less so for me. Partly so because I didn’t believe I had the skills to make a career out of it. Instead, my journey led me to graphic arts and film, but odd as it might seem, rhythm, flow, contrast - music was always a part of what I did. So here I am, also retired and trying find and to bring out what is my true calling. Thanks John.
