Song information
Back in 2006 I had an epically bad year. Death, divorce, finances, health... It was pretty grim for quite a while. So, naturally, when times get tough, I start making music. And so 2006 was also a very productive year for me musically.

As the holidays closed in, needless to say I wasn't exactly feeling festive and, as a result, I came up with this song. A melancholy tune with just a little hint of hope at the end. Sadly, as with so many songs from those early days of GarageBand and the former MacJams, the original version of this was lost in the Great FireWire Drive Crash of '10 (the second Great FireWire Dive Crash I experienced).

Recently, I found a cache of mp3s from those days that were tucked away in a backup file of a backup file of backup file, etc (I lost so much music on various crashed hard drive, both recorded and downloaded, before cloud storage) that, honestly, I have no idea how it got on that particular drive. an mp3 of the original version of this song was one of them.

Listening to it again, I decided I still liked the tune, though my feelings about it are much more different now than they were when I was in the throes of The Year from Hell. So I re-recorded it. It's basically the same. Maybe a hair peppier than the original and I did a little more with the vocal harmonies.

And maybe, it rings a little more hopeful than it did when I first recorded it almost 20 years ago. But the message is the same - even if my holiday season ain't the greatest, I hope everyone else has a great one!

Lyrics
E G
I sat down to write a Christmas song
	A E
but I didn’t have much to say

Joy to the world and peace on earth
don’t seem to matter much these days

With the year I’ve had you may think I’m mad
I don’t want to celebrate

It won’t be much fun cause I’ve been under the gun
since early New Year’s day

D Am
So go on and have a Merry Christmas
	C G
and maybe I’ll join on in
D Am
but don’t be surprised if there’s a tear in my eye
C D	E
and I’m just looking for a friend

I’m hoping for a Happy New Year
to be honest it can’t get much worse

But at least I’m alive and I still have my drive
and I’m looking to take what life gives

So go on and have a Merry Christmas
and maybe I’ll join on in
but don’t be surprised if there’s a tear in my eye
and I’m just looking for a friend

I really do hope the best for you all
and I hope for joy and cheer

I’ll just give you this sign that it’s gonna be fine
and this story will be told

So go on and have a Merry Christmas
and maybe I’ll join on in
but don’t be surprised if there’s a tear in my eye
and I’m just looking for a friend

So go on and have a Merry Christmas (I can’t sing happy holidays)
and maybe I’ll join on in (not this time around)
but don’t be surprised if there’s a tear in my eye (give it a year and I’ll look for that cheer)
and I’m just looking for a friend (next time it comes around)

So go on and have a Merry Christmas (I can’t sing happy holidays)
and maybe I’ll join on in (at least not this time around)
but don’t be surprised if there’s a tear in my eye (give it a year and I’ll look for that cheer)
and I’m just looking for a friend (next time it comes around)

Life's crests... Life troughs... Both can be opportunities for creativity. Creativity, in turn, can help us to process those oft strange experiences life throws our way. I'm glad to know things have turned around for you bro. Also glad you recovered and posted this fine tune. Very much enjoyed! REALLY dig the bells at the end... What a cool and apropos idea! Hope you have a safe and blessed holiday friend!
