Song information
Wrote and recorded this one back in 2022.

Quite often when I come up with an idea for a song the end result sounds nothing like what it sounded like in my head. It's usually fine. In some cases much better. This one sounds absolutely nothing like what I had originally planned and I couldn't be happier. I like this much better than what had been going through my brain.

For those of us whose formative years were in the 70s and 80s, Mutually Assured Destruction was just a fact of life. It was gonna happen. The bombs were going to drop and that would be that. Spoiler Alter - it didn't. But even though the idea faded, it never went away. Now, the idea on nuclear destruction also has friends - climate change, pandemics, crazy politics, etc. In my lifetime, we've come up with so many new and creative ways to wipe ourselves off the face of the Earth. So, yay us?

This song is a throwback to those simpler times when getting blowed up was the only thing we really worried about. It's also a throwback to some of the sounds of those times. I wouldn't really say it was "Reggae/ska Inspired." More that it was inspired by artists of the 70s and 8-s who were Reggae/ska inspired - The Specials, Madness, The Police, etc.

I think I might have posted this on MacJams.net, I can't remember for sure, but if I did, it was a slightly different version. I refined some of the instrument tracks, remixed and mastered, changed the lyrics around a little and shortened it a bit.

Anyway, hope you enjoy this song about the myriad of ways we're totally screwed!

Lyrics
Everybody
should have a gun
so if someone shoots us,
we can shoot them back

Everybody
should be a cop
except for the people
we’re afraid of

Everybody
should join the army
but if you come back injured
we’ll forget you

Everybody
should mind their own business
except when it’s something
we don’t approve of

Mutually assured destruction
for our mutual protection
making the connection
that leads to your corruption

Mutually assured destruction
mutual manipulation
guarantees participation
in our freedom’s reduction

Everybody
should have a job
and be exploited by the wealthy
and blamed for all their problems

Everybody
should watch TV
propaganda for the masses
streamed into your brain

Everybody
should go to church
your easy to control
when your on you knees

Everybody
should have a vote
as long as you vote for the people
we approve of

Mutually assured destruction
for our mutual protection
making the connection
that leads to your corruption

Mutually assured destruction
mutual manipulation
guarantees participation
in our freedom’s reduction

Everybody
should have a gun
so if someone shoots us,
we can shoot them back

Everybody
should be a cop
except for minorities
and other people we’re afraid of

Everybody
should join the army
but if you come back injured
we’ll forget you

Everybody
should mind their own business
except when it’s something
we don’t approve of

Mutually assured destruction
for our mutual protection
making the connection
that leads to your corruption

Mutually assured destruction
mutual manipulation
guarantees participation
in our freedom’s reduction

Everybody
should have a job
and be exploited by the wealthy
and blamed for all our problems

Everybody
should watch TV
propaganda for the masses
streamed into your brain

Everybody
should go to church
your easy to control

Everybody
should have a vote
as long as you vote for the people

Mutually assured destruction
for our mutual protection
making the connection
that leads to your corruption

Mutually assured destruction
mutual manipulation
guarantees participation
in our freedom’s reduction

Marley approved jamming. The apocalyptic lyric features all value social tropes but maybe there is a twist. I think it’s there.

Definitely Reggae inspired. Old enough here to get your references. Actually in early grades I remember hiding under desks during nuclear bomb drills.

Sardonic and insightful wit in those lyrics. The harmonized verses sound great! Sadly, a very timely piece still...

I finally got the second level of the lyrics that was not obvious at the beginning ;-)

This is excellent. Your lyrics expresses the concerns we all have for the future of mankind. It was going so much better in the 90s and then the past 10 years it is all going in reverse while mother nature is preparing for punishment. On the music part a well played reggae tune

The base line is real sweet, laid back but telling you like it is, cool groove!
