Resurrecting old headphones

29-Jul-2024 | 7:40 AM
Back in the iComps days, I had a great pair of headphones that I used to track and get my early mixes up and going. That model was the Yamaha RM3. They are long-discontinued.

Eventually, the ear cushions of the RM3 started flaking off horribly. After a session, I'd look in the mirror and see black crud on my ears. So, I retired these headphones and bought a pair of Sony 7506 headphones because they came highly recommended. But... things just weren't the same.

I never threw away the old RM3's, however. Recently, I dug them up and decided to order replacement ear cushions. A good deal of searching led me to conclude that no after-market ear cushion maker provides an exact replacement for the RM3's. But, by measuring things, I located some ear cushions that were close enough. I ordered them, and they arrived by mail today.

I was able to use adhesive to attach them to my old headphones, and when I tried them on, they felt so nice and comfortable! It's like having an old friend back!

So... if you've got a pair of headphones that you know and trust, you don't need to throw them away when they show signs of aging. Order some replacement ear cushions, and they could receive a second life!

Yes, it is often possible to find aftermarket ear cushions on sites like Ali Express and often cheap. They may last less long than originals but I usually just order 2 or 3 pairs. And for some brands you can even get new top cushions that also often fail.
I have a pair of AKGs where the problem is elastic bands that goes slack. Here the solution was adding wire strips on the slide rod so they got fixed in the position for my head.

You're right @KennethLavrsen  -- ordering a 2nd or 3rd pair would be a good idea!
