Well I'll be - I looked it up and the star spangled banner was based on the British "The Anacreontic Song" by John Stafford Smith. Thanks for making me learn something today!
@Bowman It always struck me as ironic that after defeating the english in a war of independance the states would use a pub song as the national anthem-but there ye go
