Song information
This is the second of only two sad love songs that I’ve recorded. I did record a third, but it was written by another artist on another site some years back. (I plan to eventually post that one as well…)

The other sad love song is called AFTER AUGUST, and will be posted… well… after August, in the first week of September. (How very ANAL of me!)

For those who have never read The Odyssey, the lyric “I hear the Sirens wailing! Please tie me to the mast” is Homeric imagery (The Odyssey, XII, 50; etc.).

I try to write all my stuff from experience and/or deep conviction. To write a truly sad love song, I literally have to reach back decades for any kind of emotional authenticity; so I pretty much confine myself to happier love songs. (Yes, I’ve been one of the “lucky” ones…)

This is one of those “What if things had turned out differently than they actually did?” kind of tunes. The sadness comes from some very old memories. The theme is sheer fantasy.

I’ve written the above because, back when I posted the demo on another site, one listener demanded to know “Who IS she?!?!?” Guess the feelings I conveyed therein were just a little too “authentic” for him. Ha ha…

Anyway, hope some of you can enjoy this one!

PS: The photo is of my younger brother Tom in a friend’s swimming pool. You’ll be relieved to know that he was never in any real danger!

Lyrics
TREADING WATER

I
I've loved you for a long time.
Of that you can be sure.
When I think of the years we've been apart,
it's more than I can endure.
While I wandered down life's alleys
you were always there with me;
shining brightly in my darkness,
although I could not see.

II
Now I wonder what it means:
you back in my life again.
Is there a purpose, or a goal?
Will I be left dangling without end?

With you I'm treading water.
Don't know if I'll sink or swim.
Don't know from one day to the next,
if it's me you love or him.

FIRST CHORUS:
Someone throw me out a lifeline!
You know I'm sinking fast.
Don't know how long I can stay afloat;
how much longer I can last.
I hear the Sirens wailing!
God please tie me to the mast!
Will I navigate this passageway,
or against the rocks be cast?

SECOND CHORUS:
Someone throw me out a lifeline!
You know I'm sinking fast.
Don't know how long I can stay afloat;
how much longer I can last.
I hear the Sirens wailing!
Please tie me to the mast!
Will I navigate this passageway,
or against the rocks be cast?

III
Don't know quite how to decipher
all those signals that you send;
but it'll be a death-sentence,
if you say we're “only friends.”

With you I'm treading water.
Don't know if I'll sink or swim.
Don't know from one day to the next,
if it's me you love or him.

Don't know from one day to the next,
if it's me you love,
---me you love or him.

Sometimes a love story is not easy to live. Specially when this love is out of the standard. Poignant song my friend.

I spent a lot of time playing folk and for me this is a fine example of the genre In places the vocal has shades of richard thompson but is also unique-great song

The good Mr. Hughson: I happen to be quite fond of Richard Thompson, so it's possible he influenced this one just a tad. I love folk, and have written and recorded a few folkish pieces, but my acoustic playing is not that good so normally I like to hide behind the roar of an electric guitar. Anyway, thanks for listening and for the kind review.

Wonderful lyrics and melody...I love how the instrumentation sounds happy in many of the parts, but it's all pulled back by the lyrical context in your words.! Very deep and emotional material!

Tele: Thanks man. Weird thing is that when I wrote this I was in a Cipro Antibiotic induced state of psychosis. Wrote my two saddest songs while in that condition. Go figure .. 🤔 Tony: The juxtaposition of happy with sad is probably the result of the state I was in at the time. See my reply to Tele above. I appreciate your listening and commenting friend... 😊

Mark: Thank you very much. I'm inexperienced with the use of orchestration. I just play what I hear in my head without any idea of what I'm doing. Almost went with oboe. Chose flute instead. Might be because I'm such a Tull fan! 😁 ArtNeuro: Thanks for stopping by and giving this a chance. Normally I prefer to rock out, but now and again I calm down a bit... Ha ha .. 😋 dee: Thanks dee. I'm glad you like this one. I decided to post it after listening to a few StanTheManOh songs. He can sure write 'em! 😘

Great lyrics, The guitar , and singing reminds me of early Cohen.

Dyl: Thanks for the words of encouragement. I am a total amateur when it comes to string arrangements. I just play it by ear and feel. I'm relieved to hear that someone more talented than myself believes they're a perfect fit for this tune! 😀👌

Very good song, Mike. Sounds like the type of storytelling song I would write too! Real good lyrics! Love the cello interlude ... did you get that instrument in Garageband? I have not learnt how to get this kind of tone! Great cello melody!

Stan: Glad you liked the song. Re the cello. I used a Logic Pro setting for the "voice." I added a tiny bit of distortion to simulate the natural raw cello sound (i.e., make it sound a little less digital...). Sometimes one has to enhance the provided settings a tad to get the sound one is after. As for the writing, I don't think I'm quite in your league, but thank you for the compliment! 😋
