SID THE STARLING It was one evening in August when Sid came to stay He arrived during the evening in a most unusual way I was sitting eating my tea and watching the news at six When I heard this tapping noise coming from the chimney bricks. He had fallen down the chimney instead of taking flight He fell out with Lucy Blackbird who came him such a fright Stuck behind my gas fire, I thought whatever shall I do Shall have to do something or the bird may turn blue So I rang John the Gas man and told him of my plight Can you save Sid I said, he is screaming with all his might I will be round in an hour he said, dont worry, he wont fry He'll be alright till then, hes got air coming from the sky Just as well it is summer and the gas fire was not hot Else he may have burnt his wings and that would be his lot So John turns up an hour later with all his tools in tow This should be easy he said, just a few screws on the top row. But, 'oh no,' it was not to be easy, it was stuck solid as a rock The fireplace cemented to the gas fire, no movement from its dock The previous owners had built the fireplace around the gas fire And it was leaving John scratching his head and Sid very dire. John said there is nothing for it, but to demolish your fireplace We have to move this gas fire, else Sid will be saying his grace 5 hours it took, it was nearly midnight before we got him free But he was alright though, and seemed to chirp and smile at me He had a drink of water and flew off into the night sky My lounge looked like a builders yard, 'what am I to do, oh my' With the fireplace in bits, it took 3 weeks to put it back right My chimney pot now sealed off, no more Sids to give me a fright.
