Song information
The music came first here. I was messing with the electric piano sounds I had and came up with the chords. I had been listening to some of The Brothers Johnson's stuff they had done with Quincy Jones in their heyday, and that might have been an influence. The lyrics, which aren't much, and were partially based on my experiences in LA, where I lived for eight years, and what other folks' perspective on the same thing, came later.

Lyrics
We came to this town hand in hand
Cause we thought we were coming to a promised land
But now we find this place, it has no soul
And we thought we'd have it all
But nothing in the bowl

CHORUS:
What are we gonna do in this town tonight
What are we gonna do in the streets today
To try to find some way to make life worthwhile
Cause we thought we'd have it all

Among the palm trees and the smog filled boulevards
There are those we can talk to when times are hard
But that can only help for a little while
Just a few seconds pass, and then it's hard to force a smile

REPEAT CHORUS:

Hi Mark.. I can relate to those lyrics..imo, those are really good lyrics.. and not just cause I understand them. I moved to LA in late 1976.. it was already going downhill but nothing like now.  You have captured the higher quality of music that was around during the mid-late 70s ( Brothers Johnson) Your vocals, always top quality and pure. ( oh 1 good thing about LA, somehow they got rid of the smog)

The chords in this song are ... delicious. Soft and smooth. Lovely song. Super guitar solo

Yep, feelin' the Brothers Johnson vibe, you've done a few with this laid-back style. Of course, my experience of Pacific Coast Highway and California is much different than yours being a native. It's not all Hollywood and sunshine here Lol. But I can see clearly now the smog is gone (or at least diminished). Wanna take this one further? Already gathering music for the next album...

@Venturesome
Really pleasant and laid back tune Mark.
Like Kenneth, I too really enjoyed that nice guitar soloing. (You had a velvet touch this time!)
Words and vocal are aces.

Really pretty chords and progressions. I enjoyed the vocals and the solo. I liked the vocal harmonies near the end.  Someone commented on the 'easy listening aspect', which is true, but there's a fair bit of complex harmony used here and that's not easy to pull off!

The vocals here are finer than previous work, fab!   The west coast illusion theme is huge in our culture.  Unfortunately your gorgeous piano piece doesn't explore the obvious answers to the problems.  (IMHO)Everyone is afraid of the answers.  Nice tag on the way out.
