Last couple of posts have been on the serious side as to subject matter.
What say we have a little FUN?
After hearing the genius instrumental “Surfing To Mecca,” by the Celtic-rock group TEMPEST (NOT the metal group by the same name)—and having been a long time fan of DICK DALE (and of surf music in general)—I decided to try my hand at doing a surf-punk rocker. This tune from back in 2011 is the result I’m afraid…
A newly remastered full band piece featuring:
Yours truly (Micheal Wark) on main guitar riff. Vic Holman on background surf guitar. Michael (Fast Eddie) Aisheim on bass. Scott Fugate on drums.
Try not to WIPE OUT while listening…
;-)
PS: Jimi Hendrix once said: “You will never hear surf music again!”
Mike, Hendrix did not say what you imagine he said, his point was not a specific hatred of surf music, it was that he, and his fellow freaks, had outwitted the formulaic corrupt corporate music industry. This is a cool genre driven ride. Disco next?
Surf music indeed, but to my ears considerably harder and more rocking than the Beach Boys ever would have done. The guitar work here is first class. Superb if I may say so.
Once again you have misread my intention. He DID say exactly that in "Third Stone From The Sun" as a joke. There is no suggestion there OR HERE that he hated surf music. I can well imagine him at a Dick Dale concert grinning widely and digging the music.
Thanks though for the rest of the comment. I appreciate it.
Mike Third Stone From the Sun takes its inspiration from a Daffy Duck Cartoon. Hendrix, in his alien persona demands the earth be sterilized because he can not understand humanity. His comment about Surf music is a nod to Dick Dale, Once you die? No more surf music! He is making fun, in his own strange way.
On this tune I played the main riff. I actually asked Vic Holman if he could play his parts in the Venture's style of surf music for contrast. He did it soooo well.
Surf! And punk? ... Yeah! Why not! Let us have some fun. And we do. I love the experience. Batteries all charged up after this wonderful listen. Cool mixing and mastering.
Glad you like this punkish approach bro. I tried to make a punk face for the photo, like you did for YOUR punk tune, but couldn't pull it off, so I had to resort to the surfer pic. Lol...
This hype me up to go back and train for the waves started a couple summer back here at our beach the coach had me tedious workout on the sand to prep me
What a wealth of energy in this song. I guess this is how surf song should sound like. Am not qualified to comment this genre even more when it has a touch of punk. Anyway, what I hear is very well composed and performed. Great sound as usual from Tom.
To clarify: This is an old tune from many years ago. The original files are lost so a remix by Tom was not possible. The mix is my own. However, it took Tom's mastering skills to give it the big sound it now has.
Kowabanga- Kowabanga-Kowabanga.. You've modernized surf music to the 21st century..Listen to 'dem drums! This is a best of best of anything I have heard on here..Who needs lyrics- this was meant to be an instrumental. Perfect mix.. This was so real, I got water in my ears.. whew!
Joyce, the boys in the band deserve major kudos for this one. By myself I don't believe I could have pulled this off. Then, as per usual, Tom's mastering brought it home!
Hey Shaun, the Beach Boys never entered the equation when writing or recording this. The main influences were the Ventures and especially Dick Dale (if memory serves).
