Song information
On June 10th, 1971 (53 years ago!) the Red Rocks Amphitheater, ended up hosting the biggest RIOT in American rock history! Mine was the view from “ground zero”… not more than 15 feet from the initial flashpoint of the riot!

The “official” story is that the riot ensued after a mob of young attendees tried to “bum rush” the gate in order to get in free. This is an absolute lie. Those who tried to rush the gate were fleeing the tear gas, police dogs, and clubs of at out-of-control police force! I only got in because some guy who wasn’t about to stick around and get his head bashed in sold me his ticket for four dollars.

I've been telling this tale to family and friends for many years now. I had just turned 18 only two months before this event. I thought it was about time I committed this story to song. (I’m really quite surprised that no one else has after all these years!)

Written and recorded in 2018.

This is NOT a sweeping condemnation of our boys in blue. I've known too many, and have the deepest respect for them, what they have to do, and the sacrifices they have to make.

Nevertheless, sometimes there's a rotten few in the barrel, and things like this do happen now and again; and when they do, they're all too often swept under the rug.

I do NOT wish to give the impression that I in any way subscribe to the anti-authoritarianism promoted by today's political extremists. While I’m definitely no fan of big government (whether Left or Right); all out anarchy is social suicide. Nuff said…

Heartfelt thanks to my friends DAN KNUDSEN (GuitarDanno46) for deigning to collaborate with me on this one. He played Baritone rhythm guitar, in open A, with a capo on the 3rd fret (left channel); and TOM HELLSTENS (Toveco) for his fabulous mastering job!

Be well all!

:-)

Lyrics
Ballad Of Red Rocks

I
Oh... I was there at Red Rocks in '71,
and I saw the whole deal go down.
I was one of the many came to see the show,
and the good folks there on the grounds.

I came to hang with my brothers and sisters,
and to groove on Tull's rockin' sound.

II
Well the police showed like an occupying force;
on the peaceful crowd they did descend.
They had tear-gas, pepper-gas, dogs and clubs.
Trouble clearly was their intent!

No they weren't there to protect and serve.
It seemed like they were Hades sent!

CHORUS:
It's a big damn lie!
It's a big damn lie after all!
When history's written by the winners,
then the losers take the fall.

Neither the truth of the matter
nor right and wrong,
are factored into it at all!
When history's written by the winners,
then the losers take the fall.

III
The police they were so belligerent;
---started pushin' concert-goers around.
They were herding us like cattle into smaller groups,
creating arbitrary bounds.

Yeah, they were separating friends and lovers,
with their arbitrary bounds.

IV
Well one young girl got cut off
from the friends who brought her to the affair.
She was scared and cryin', and she begged the cops
to let her please cross over there...

The police just laughed and told her “NO!”
They said: “Listen girl, don't you dare!”
Well she panicked and she went for it anyway,
they sicked the dogs all over her!

Then the crowd rose up in her defense,
and it all went south from there!

CHORUS:
It's a big damn lie!
It's a big damn lie after all!
When history's written by the winners,
then the losers take the fall.

Neither the truth of the matter
nor right and wrong,
are factored into it at all!
When history's written by the winners,
then the losers take the fall.

Guitar!

V
Well I somehow managed to get inside
to safety as I did suppose.
But the cops fired gas into the amphitheater
on the innocents watching the show!

As I struggled to breathe with my lungs on fire,
there was one thing that I wanted to know:
Why a force sworn to protect and serve
turned a party into a war zone?

VI
I recently discovered the “official” account
while surfing on the internet.
It put all the blame on that crowd of kids;
absolved the officers of all guilt.

Well it filled my heart with sadness.
The same stuff still happens today;
and the facts about government-sanctioned evil
tend to get swept away...

CHORUS:
It's a big damn lie!
It's a big damn lie after all!
When history's written by the winners,
then the losers take the fall.

Neither the truth of the matter
nor right and wrong,
get factored into it at all!
When history's written by the winners,
then the losers take the fall.

CHORUS:
It's a big damn lie!
It's a big damn lie after all!
When history's written by the winners,
then the losers...
take the fall.

Thanks James. You've heard a few earlier attempts at getting the mix right. I too think this is the best of the lot.
I learned a lot from the experience of the riot. I simply HAVE to tell this story...

Hi Omar. Over the years I've checked the details with a couple friends who were also there. The incident with the teen age girl was the real reason it all went so wrong. I still don't know why so many police showed up to begin with. There were several on horseback and even a helicopter. It was as if they came hoping for a fight!
Livingston Taylor, who was the opening act, quit his set early and got outta there. Not Jethro Tull, in spite of the panic and gas everywhere they came out and did a full and fantastic show. Front man Ian Anderson did a masterful job keeping the crowd relatively calm. I will never forget that day!
Glad you enjoyed the song brother!

Mike... this is a gem.beautifully written and sung/played.  I dont thing I heard a song I didn't like from you.  I remember a similar thing back in the early 80s at a concert at the castle farms in michigan but it was the concert goers fault.  There was a fight in the parking lot and a bunch of guys attacked a car and one guy jumped on the roof of a car.  The guy in the car panicked and he went forward.  The guy on the roof fell behind the car and then the car went in reverse running him over.  I don't think he survived.  It was terrible.  Soon after that they stopped having concerts at the castle.

A story that had to be told, for sure, thanks for that Mike. And i suppose there's a thousand more (stories) waiting to be told... Love the way you deliver this, amost like a James McMurtry tune...

Wow Matt,
That too is a horrific tale. As the counter culture devolved over time from being peacenik dominated to gansta dominated I quit attending concerts altogether. It's safer to just watch live performances on DVD.
Thanks for the comment bro. Glad you enjoyed the tune!

Wow ! Great tune ! Most of your songs trigger some sort of emotional tie to my life but this one triggered a total flashback. My rendition of the unfolding situation is similar to yours. As I recall, most everyone had money to pay to get in but were told it was sold out. This led to people climbing the boulders and hillside to view the show. Then came the attack dogs. One of the more horrific things I've seen and then  the tear gas. First but not last experience of that at a concert. Glad I missed the war going on outside which looked like a war zone when we left the show that night.

@Chips
How wonderful to meet someone else on this site who also lived through that mess!
Too bad we didn't have smart phones back then so the thing could be video documented.
As for outside after the show... I was horrified at the busted heads, a burned police car and other "war zone" views. But those of us who made it inside didn't escape the gas. I was right in front of the stage when I heard a loud POP not far from my head. My lungs filled with gas and I doubled over. It was awful.
I'll never forget Ian Anderson reminding the crowd that it was about twenty times harder for him to play the flute than it was for them to just breathe. Also him looking up at the helicopter overhead and saying: "Welcome to World War III"!
It still surprises me that no one else who was there seems to have written a song about the event...
Anyway, GLAD you enjoyed the music my friend. SORRY for the horrific flashback. Lol...

It really WAS long ago... but to me it still seems soooo recent. Experiences like this get imprinted on one's memory rather deeply I guess. The event may be history now, but the lessons thereof are (sadly) always current.
Glad you enjoyed the song my friend!

Many thanks Your Jack-ness!
On setting the record straight:
Some think the rioting started when fans rushed the gate to get in free. What is not often understood is that the riot started first.
I know this for two reasons. 1) I witnessed the incident that caused the crowd to rise up against and begin throwing stones at the police, and 2) when I managed to get to the gate myself, there was as yet no crowd of concert goers "bum rushing" the gate to get in. So the riot started first and the police instigated it.
Many of those who eventually DID "bum rush" the gate were simply trying to get away from being bitten, gassed, or clubbed by an out of control police force who apparently came spoiling for a fight to begin with. Who can blame THESE kids for wanting to get in "free"?
Thanks for listening and commenting old friend!

My man Stan! Thanks so much for the kind review. If memory serves, this is the first time I ever got the "Lightfoot" comparison. I'm not overly familiar with his songs. I only know perhaps three. My love of folkier music mostly leans to Irish, Scottish, and English folk; along with a smattering of Appalachian Americana.
