Song information
The lyrics to this song are pretty much self-explanatory.

I lived this once… long ago. When it happened, it felt like my life was over. Had I succumbed to this feeling, it surely would have been.

As things turned out, it was the birthing of a new and better life!

Lyrics, vocal, effected acoustic guitar, bass and midi drums by yours truly.

Joining me on this song is Al Hughson, who plays electric rhythm guitar, and some exquisite lead guitar licks.

Heartfelt thanks bro!

Lyrics
DESOLATION

I
Since you left me babe, I feel so lost and empty;
like a jack-knifed truck abandoned on the highway.
Nothing tastes or sounds the same anymore.
I won’t survive this situation.
Whoa-Oh… desolation…

Chorus:
Whatever happened to all the love that we once shared;
—all those years of sweet elation?
All that I once held dear gone now in a puff of smoke;
now that the train has left the station.
Oh desolation…
Oh desolation…

Transition:
I never saw this coming, no.
I’m unsure all the reasons why.
I only know I’m partly to blame.
You made it clear,
you don’t want to talk about it.
You’d rather be on your way…

II
I wake up in the morning,
are things really as they seem?
I have to pinch myself;
t’ see if I’m dreaming…
Then that gnawing loneliness,
it creeps back on in.
I won’t survive this situation.
Whoa-oh…desolation…

Chorus:
Whatever happened to all the love that we once shared;
—all those years of sweet elation?
All that I once held dear gone now in a puff of smoke;
now that the train has left the station.
Desolation…
Oh-Oh desolation…
Oh-Oh-Oh desolation…

Yeah bro... The experience is probably common enough... Sadly.
However, when one is in the thick of it one feels like the only one in the world who is suffering. Like total emotional isolation... Not a good memory to be sure, but at least I got a decent tune out of it, however many years it took. (Over 50 years... A fact that is scary in and of itself! Lol ...)

It’s a feeling a lot of us can relate to for sure. At the risk of sounding like a male chauvinist, this is a song that most defiantly came from a guy. Not that women can’t be and are surly hurt, but I don’t think they process it quite the same. Hey what do I know. I’m just an old guy.  Enjoyed this Mike.  Charlie

Thanks Charlie:
How women do or do not process a hurt like this is something I'm not qualified to understand or comment on. One of them would have to school me. Even then I think that the best I could do is feel empathy. Btw, I've never wished the young lady on which this song is based anything but good. I truly hope she went on to have a good life. I did, and DO!

Great work, both of you. Like so many others, I can definitely identify with the lyrics and the feelings behind them. Your words really bore to the heart of that feeling and the plaintive guitar adds an impactful emphasis. When you see such a shared experience, even after all the needed time is passed, it makes you feel better, And seeing that others have come out the other side better for it makes your feel even better.
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Joseph. It's obvious you really GET this song. Yeah, we're never quite as desolate or isolated as our personal pains would have us believe. Someone somewhere has had a similar experience and can empathize!

You sure know how to write lyrics, Mike.. Your vocal style have the matching vulnerability. Al's guitar work co-ordinates expressing pain and.. desolation! If a guitar could talk, huh? I could hear a smidgen of Ian Anderson in your voice in a few parts. I like the 'hanging guitar note' at the end- 2 thumbs upto you both

Dave,
Most of us have known "desolation" at one time or another...to one degree or another...
It hurts like hell, but often life compensates, or even OVER compensates, us for that pain.
But then, that's a completely different song, ain't it? Lol...
Be well friend!
