Song information
It was sometime between 2007 and 2009 that I recorded this Progressive Rock song.

In 2018 I did a remix, and in 2024 Tom Hellstens worked his mastering magic on it.

The song is based on one of Plato’s most famous myths—found in Republic, Book X, 614b-621b—and upon teachings inscribed on the ancient Orphic Gold Plates that have been found all over Greece.

Myth and fantasy tend to provide good subject matter for Prog-Rock tunes IMHO.

Anyway, it’s been awhile since I posted a Prog tune. I hope some of you can appreciate this one!

Be well all!

PS: “Lethe” means forgetfulness…
“Ananke” means necessity.

Lyrics
LETHE (The Myth Of Er)

I
A child of earth, and of starry heaven too,
fallen from great heights, into this world below;
to take a turn down here on this sorrowful weary wheel,
and try to burn out this desire that I feel.

And as I knelt to drink, I heard the prophet speak,
such words as these to me:
“When the draught you partake,
take care your thirst not to slake,
under the white cypress tree.”

II
I awake here, now I’m under Lethe’s spell.
I drank too deeply from her intoxicating swell;
but now and then my friends I get a glimpse it seems;
of something that the prophet said to me:

“When Lethe’s draught takes effect,
all that you know you’ll forget,
though it remains deep in your soul.
If in the life you’ve chosen,
on the path of virtue you go;
you may finally recollect.”

III
Lost in this shadowland;
I resolve to take a stand.
I gaze at the starry night.
I’m drawn towards the Light…

IV
I am a pilgrim on virtue’s hallowed road.
The path less taken is where one finds the gold.
Ananke’s spindle turns, revolves eternally;
the axis of this cosmic shadow that we see.

And when again I drink, and the prophet starts to speak;
I’ll heed the words he says to me:

“When the draught you partake,
take care your thirst not to slake,
under the white cypress tree.”

This is really super cool.   Great prog stuff.   Reminds me of the stuff Yes did on "Tales From Topographic Oceans."  Thumbs up.

It's not often that I listen to a song until the end (I admit). Being a fan of prog-rock I appreciated all the changes in this song and especially the instrumental passages. Lot of very good ideas. Great work Mike.

Thank you Mark. I remember that YES album. One of my fave prog lps at the time. They, along with early King Crimson, E.L.P., "Selling England By The Pound" era Genesis, and of course Jethro Tull, are my main prog influences.

Many thanks Thierry! Whenever I post a prog rock tune I think of you and axiously await your reaction. (Seriously!) I appreciate that you patiently sat through and attentively listened to this piece.
Thot I'd lost the original files when my old Mac crashed. I was heartbroken! Turned out I had burned the files onto a DVD, so I was able to recover them and do a remix/remaster.
 I've always been rather proud of this one.

Great song Mike.  Big fan of Prog.  Your lyrics are poetry.  I won't even try to guess what goes on in that head of yours to give such a great imagination 😂
