Song information
In this tune I try my hand at Progressive Rock. The song is simply a lament for the human condition.

Thankfully, this is one of a handful of older tunes that survived the great Mac crash of 2011, leaving the file stems unscathed and fully intact.

On this posting the original demo from 2010 has been partially re-recorded (drums and electric guitars), and thoroughly remixed and remastered.

At the time of the original recording I had recently procured some Mellotron software. This is one of a handful of tunes I got to use it on before the crash.

Sadly, when I got my new Mac in 2017, the upgraded Logic Pro would not recognize the software. Fortunately, I had converted the Mellotron parts of this tune to aiff just prior to the crash. Don’t remember exactly why I did it, but I’m sure glad I did! Substituting a synth for the Mellotron tracks would have totally changed the sound. The Mellotron strings have a darker, warmer, and more ethereal sound, which I think fits the theme like a glove…

Anyway, thanks in advance for listening.

Be well friends!

Lyrics
JANUS FACED

I reach for the stars, but fall into an abyss;
dug with my own two hands, while I was not looking.
I call out for help, but my cries are swallowed by the din.
It’s then the clear truth dawns:
My enemy lies within!

I’m Janus-faced… I’ve got a Janus-faced heart.
Yeah, I’m Janus-faced; and it’s tearing me apart.

It’s a tale of two psyches; of a heart divided that cannot stand.
Will I break free of hate’s gravity, or sink down in the quicksand?

Did I sign on for this?
Is there something that I missed?
Some kind of karmic debt?
Or my ego’s bag of tricks?

Lost in uncertainty… one thing I know for sure:
This is not the world I wanted.
This is NOT the world I wanted!

Well I’m Janus-faced, looking East and West.
Yeah, I’m Janus-faced.
There’s a conflict in my breast.

One part of me is praying for protection on your head.
The other part of me would really like to see you DEAD!

We’re all Janus-faced… It’s a Jekyll and Hyde scenario.
We’re all Janus-faced… It’s the human condition don’t you know?

Caught up in perpetual conflict. Distracted by the battle sounds.
In our delirium, we don’t notice as the quicksand sucks us down!

Did we sign on for this?
Is there something we have missed?
Some kind of karmic debt?
Or the ego’s bag of tricks?

Lost in this travesty… one thing we know for sure:
This is not the word we wanted.
This is NOT the world we wanted!

NO!!!

Cool story and music to accompany. I thought of a more prog version of the Cars or Gary Numan. This one really grabs my attention.

Mike the mellotron is in Garage Band and available in the Logic Legacy draw down menu. This is a more modern sound I guess. Sounds good in the mix. You were very fortunate to get your tunes back after all the computer troubles. Good for us all!

Mark: Ha ha... Once again I get compared to folk I've never listened to. Even though it cracks me up a little I really DO appreciate the intended compliment! 😋

Daug, I don't use GB anymore and the mellotron options in Logic are limited and rather pathetic. At any rate they're not as good as the software I used to have. Only a few tune files survived. Many more did not. I'm so grateful these did survive. The original demo needed a helluva lot of work to get it to where it is now! Thanks for the support bro! 😋

Prog rock has been my favorite genre for years (Genesis, Pink Floyd, Yes, ...). Mellotron is perfect to get a 70's touch to the sound. Enjoyed your song Mike.

Strong song writing, fantastic production. Brillant lyrics. There was a band called "Janus" back in the day. I don't think they had a clue what the name really meant or neither did I at the time. Thank for posting.

Hmmm I thought I had left a comment ... but I guess not! You have quite a variety of styles! Am I jealous? Betcha! And you have the ability to change moods mid-stream! Wow! I can't do that! Guess I don't have those kinds of skills! May be too late to learn! Good music, this!

Stan, Re styles... I like all kinds of music and it's fun for me to try my hand at different styles. It doesn't always work out, but when it does... Yahoo! Don't underestimate yourself my friend. You don't know what you can or can't pull off till you give it a go! Thanks for listening! 😋

Al, Thanks for listening brother! I enjoy employing mythological themes whenever I can. They tend to speak to deeper layers of the human psyche. And music is, after all, all about communication. "Talking to people in my way..." (Ian Anderson in Jethro Tull's: "Playing In Time," BENEFIT, 1970) 😋

Really great tune, definitely a 70's vibe. Kinda reminds me of a Bowie tune. Great job with the mix of instruments, panning, dynamics and just a fun song to listen to!!

Ah, this brings me back in time, the time I love the most 70s! You did a bloody good job on this, it sounds authentic for the time :)

The vocals definitely evoke Bowie without being an imitation, while the arrangement definitely has both a Prog and New Wave feel to it. Can't go wrong with a Mellotron, fake or not.
