Bagatelle literally means “a short unpretentious instrumental composition”, or a “trifle” in French and German.
This little 'trinket' focuses on melody.
Writing a memorable melody is not an easy task. All the good ones are already taken (with reason). Chord progressions come, and they suggest melodic gestures, which then are massaged into melodies. Sometimes lyrics are added. It's always a challenge (for me) to write melody.
Instrumentation: Clarinet in B-Flat, Bassoon, Piano
Melody is everything for me in music. I do not care about genre. I care about melody. And this piece has a beautiful melody held by equally beautiful harmonies. Super nice choice of instruments. I love it
Brahms didn’t consider himself a gifted melodist (although he did have his share of really fine ones) yet his music speaks to anyone with ears.
I enjoyed this calming piece quite a bit John. And the melody worked well.
Cheers.
