WHEN WE WERE YOUNG I When we were young we played to win, —cast all caution to the wind, —roll of the dice and off we’d go again! Thumbed our nose at society, in our childish naiveté; —railed against it’s hypocrisy and sins. 1st Chorus: We were so young how could we know, —which way to go, on life’s rocky road? So many questions in our minds… In the end we were all just running blind! II Then came responsibilities! We settled into new routines. At last we took our place in the machine. We learned the art of compromise. Our absolutism died; but we still idealized and dreamed… 2nd Chorus: We were so young, how could we see, which way to be, while staying free? So many voices in our heads… In the end just tryin’ to stay fed! [Instrumental Section] III The circling years have come and gone, with battles lost and battles won; we’re still livin’ under the gun, aren’t we? We fight the fight and do our best; —hold our convictions in our breast. Each generation learns these things afresh… 3rd Chorus: We live with one foot in the past; the other in the future, ever mindful of our task. We all have songs that must be sung. Some things haven’t changed since we were young…
