Song information
Maryanne (pic aged 18) was my first love. We met when we were both 17 at school. She was a beautiful redhead with a kind heart. But our time together was cut short - she had an aggressive form of leukemia. Losing her was heartbreaking, and even after 40 years, I still think of her often.

This song is a tribute to the love we shared and to her incredible strength.

Just before Christmas, her mother passed away, and I attended her funeral. As the music began to play, I realized it was the same they had played for Maryanne all those years ago. It was a bittersweet moment, a reminder that love and memories never fade.

This song is the first chance I get to use the VTC Helicon Harmony Singer, to do the harmonies.

Lyrics
Maryanne
(A Song for Her)
by Gerald G
©Copyright 2025

Verse 1
In a small-town summer, where the skies were wide,
I met an angel with fire in her stride.
Her hair like the sunset, her smile so bright,
Maryanne, my first love, lit up my life.

Verse 2
Six months of laughter, of dreams untold,
A love so tender, more rare than gold.
Through hospital halls, she fought with grace,
A warrior's spirit in a fragile space.

Chorus
Maryanne, oh Maryanne, your flame burned so high,
You danced in the dark, a star in the sky.
Though the night came too soon, and the world felt so cold,
Your light lives forever, more precious than gold.

Instrumental

Verse 3
In autumn rains, her name softly calls,
Whispered in leaves as the golden light falls.
Though decades have passed, she lingers so near,
Her laughter, her love, still echo so clear.

Chorus
Maryanne, oh Maryanne, your flame burned so high,
You danced in the dark, a star in the sky.
Though the night came too soon, and the world felt so cold,
Your light lives forever, more precious than gold.

Outro
Now every sunset, every fiery hue,
I see her hair, her heart shining through.
Maryanne, my angel, you’ll always remain,
The love of my youth, my eternal flame.

@Garni
Damn this one hurts! A few years ago I heard through the grapevine that an old girlfriend of mine from when I was 17 had passed away. A portion of my heart seemed to go empty... I for one will never forget anyone I have ever loved, be it ever so long ago...
Thanks for this beautiful and unutterably sad song...

What a sad story Gerald... The intro was superb. The rest of the song stays in the same mood maybe with a little more lightness. Great tribute.

Delicate subject, and your musical treatment is perfect for it... It walks along a tight rope between melancholia and despair, and never falls. Not easy to do... Beautiful moment, G.

Yes, your first love always has that special part in your heart.
Maryanne has that place. I am so sorry you experienced her loss at a young age.
Such a beautiful tribute Garni.
