Song information
While checking out new music this evening I noticed that the mighty
TONESTONES posted a song called 'The Cave'. I checked it out, and sure enough
it's a stellar take on one of my favorite teachings from Plato.

Well, back in late 2005 (if memory serves) I posted a song at Macjams.com
called 'The Cave (Shadow Game)'. It was the first real song I posted. Prior to
it everything I posted was instrumentals cobbled together from loops.

This was my first use of electric bass, and one of my earliest attempts at playing
lead guitar. The vocal is a tad shaky in places because I was recovering from
walking pneumonia.

The original file stems were lost long ago, so I only have the finished wav file
to work from. I remastered it as best I could for this posting...

Anyway, my take combines the messages of Plato's Cave allegory with The Gospel of John 1:1-14.

It's early... it's CRUDE... but some of you might get a kick out of it.

Be well all!

:-)

Lyrics
THE CAVE
(Shadow Game)

I
In the depths of the cavern,
the prisoners sit bound;
---chained fast in their places,
---eyes fixed on the wall.
Images of fantasy,
projections of mind;
are dancing before them
CAST
by the Great Light behind;
---the Great Light behind...

II
How came they to be
in such bondage there?
Spinning axioms like cobwebs
out of nothing but air...
Unable to know
or acknowledge the Name,
of the One Who able
to
end this shadow game,
end this shadow game,
end this shadow game...

III
In a blaze of compassion,
the Light makes Itself known.
Calling all from the shadows,
back to our true home!
In the Light of His presence,
the real you will see.
You only need ask Him,
and He'll set you free,
He'll set you free...

Great tune Mike. Your laid back vocals sound great.  Love the echo affect and Id say thats pretty sweet soloing.

Hey thanks Matt. The original was recorded on an early edition of Garage Band. (6 or 7 I think...) It had a feature that gave one more control over the depth of the echoing. I miss that! I was still mighty new to recording at the time so I'm surprised it turned out as well as it did. I've thought of re-recording it from scratch, but truth is I'm much too lazy!

Glad you like it Dave. I'm surprised by the Doors comparision... I think more of the early Moody Blues when I listen to this, but I think I get where you're coming from. But hey, either way it's a compliment! Lol...

@Dyl
Many thanks my friend. Weird thing is only four or five days before recording this my doctor told me I was near death. My pneumonia had been prolonged and severe and my constant coughing had weakened my heart. He got me on antibiotics which turned the tide. So when I recorded this I was coming from a strange place! Staring over the precipice as it were...

This is really good.  The teachings of Plato are fascinating.  I'm glad you dug this one up.  The echo effect is very appropriate for the cave vibe.  It reminds me a bit of early Moody Blues, one of my all time favorites.
I think the Logic echo effects are pretty flexible.  You should be able to get something similar.
Very cool!

I've long been fascinated with Plato, Plotinus, Proclus, Hierocles and Simplicius, and the interactions---both positive and negative---between the Platonists and Christianity through the centuries. It HAD to show up in my music sooner or later!
Glad you enjoyed this early, somewhat crude, effort my friend!

Although I've read a lot of ancient texts---both Western and Eastern (India & China)---my main interest has long been in the ancient Platonists and Stoics. Of course my #1 interest is in the Biblical tradition. All of it pops up in my music to one degree or another. They say one should write about what one "knows..." Well, I try!

Enjoyed the cave effects and thought your vocals were just fine. Well done without the stems. Thanks for the spelunking ride.
