Song information
A song about life, love, death and immortality.

The spoken/sung mid-section is slightly paraphrased from one of the ancient Greek poet Pindar’s Odes.

“Short is the space of time
in which the happiness of mortal men groweth up,
and even so, doth it fall to the ground,
when stricken down by adverse doom.
Creatures of a day, what is any one? what is he not?
Man is but a dream of a shadow…”
(Pindar, Pythian Odes VIII , 92-96)

Lyrics
DREAM OF A SHADOW

I
When I open my eyes,
and see you lying next to me;
then I stop and reflect,
how good this life has been to me.

I've got no time for empty regret...
I must seize this moment
---accept it as a gift!

II
Remembering days of my youth;
---it was a long long time ago.
They don't seem real to me now;
more like a moving picture show.

Moments slip through my fingers,
can't hold them in my grip.
They run out on the ground,
like flour through a sieve!

CHORUS:
Inside we know the score;
---deep down in our souls.
It's not our last rodeo.

The day is drawing near.
The truth will shine so clear.
It's not our last rodeo...Oh...Oh...

Bridge:
“Brief is the space of time
in which the happiness of mortals blossoms.
Even so, it falls to the ground
when stricken by adverse doom.
Creatures of a day”
---That's what we are!
“Creatures of a day....
[just] the dream of a shadow.”

III
Old death waits 'round the corner,
with judgment not that far off.
Some folks just strike out blindly.
Other folks choose to scoff.

Me, I'll give my self to love,
come what may.
And when it's time for me to leave,
I'll turn and face the day!

IV
When I open my eyes,
and see you lying next to me;
then I stop and reflect
how good this life has been to me.

Got no time for empty regret...
I must seize this moment
---accept it as a gift!

CHORUS:
Inside we know the score;
---deep down in our souls.
It's not our last rodeo.

The day is drawing near.
The truth will shine so clear.
It's not our last rodeo...Oh...

Thanks a lot my friends... I really appreciate your jumping right on this one. It's a fave of mine, primarily because of the fun I had with the instrumental mid-section. Be well all! 😋

Another gem from the Wyndsok hit factory. This is a wonderful song full of many gems. Your lyrics are easily accessible yet have a depth that draws me into the story. And the music! Again, so easy to listen to and enjoy. Not to forget... the spoken bridge. Nice touch (reminded me a bit of a Moody Blues moment). Kudos Mike

Musically it reminded me a lot of early Dire Straits as well as the aforementioned Moodies. Lyrically it hit a lot of things I've been ruminating on lately, so that was nice. Overall I quite enjoyed it -- thanks for sharing!

John: Thanks for popping in friend. I'm very fond of early Dire Straits, and have been listening to the Moodies since "Day Of Future Passed." Bits and pieces... or just some of the vibes... must have bubbled up from my subconscious! 😋

Hey Dave, you must have been writing your comment while I was responding to John's... Anyway, thanks for listening and for the kind words. It's nice to know that some of my songs merit repeated listening... Be well friend! 😋

Al, Glad you enjoyed the tune friend. As for that "bell" tone on the electric guitar; I came up on it pretty much by accident. I kept trying heavier tones and they just weren't working. Then I found one that seemed close, but still a little off. I reduced the gain a few notches and voila! 😋

I think this cool song could go on an upper level if you send it to toveco, he will add more depth and you will get a much better sound. Otherwise, there is a lot to listen in this piece, cool guitar chords and variations.

Interesting stuff going on here. It's got a slight Kill Bill vibe. Really enjoying the breakdown at 1:45 into the spoken word with acoustic guitar and the ride. This is nice. Nice job on the lead there. Your voice is easy to listen to and relatable. Cowbell :-) Nice riff in the chorus before last rodeo. Memorable and poignant.

Noah, Thank you for listening and commenting. It's weird, but sometimes your comments help me to understand my own music a little better. As for Kill Bill... I'm supposing that is a band? I have a history of being compared to bands I either know nothing about, very little about, or just have never been interested in! Kill Bill fits into the first category. Ha ha! 😋🤪😂

Great rocking ballad. Reminded me a lot of the Doors with the spoken poetry, organ, guitar solos, and groove going here. Seeing how Morrison sang about death and things related a lot adds to that feeling. I enjoyed this quite a bit.
