Song information
When I was maybe six or seven years old, on a sunny afternoon outside my house, I found myself wondering about how the present becomes the past and trying to grasp when that moment changes and is beyond reach. I decided to take that mundane moment, burn it into my mind and watch it drift away for as long as I could. I held onto that tether for years until wasn't even sure if it was anything more than a memory of that memory. It's still there and there is a contiguous span of life reaching out to the present.

Lyrics
I've been collecting toy soldiers and sea shells
the old things from my closet
I read through the moments
memories of memories
There's someone singing softly
my father, the t.v.
the stars on my ceiling
It's all so faded yellow
that sky was painted over long ago

I'm falling
falling
falling

A young boy
took a moment
and cast it behind him
He watched it from then on
a wish that eluded
the boy who turned around
and what he found was that he'd gone nowhere

I've been dreaming
of packing and leaving
the old things lost in boxes
I can almost feel that moment
memories of memories
There's someone singing softly
my father, the t.v.
the stars on my ceiling
It's all so faded yellow
that sky was painted over long ago

I'm falling
falling
falling
I've been falling since that moment on

I think it is your writing that I find most compelling... even your description section is evcotive... took me to places and experiences from my early youth... but your description of "memories of memories" rings most true. I find myself telling old stories that I know actually happened... but I know longer really remember the event, only the story... this offering captures those early forming ideas... the mixture of mystery and confusion

You have a ton of great tunes, but this one has always been my favorite of yours since you first posted it on MJ years ago. Can't tell you how many times I've listened to it over the years and it still stirs a lot of feelings, and memories, all these years later.

Another stellar song - production and performances are so right.
I have trouble remembering much of my childhood - it's admittedly a long time ago now - and most of my memories are memories of photographs of what happened then rather than the actual events.
At 74, it's sometimes sad to think I've forgotten so much.
There's something about your voice and phrasing that really touches my nostalgia nerve.  The idea that you did this as an amateur songwriter back in MJ days is still hard to believe.
Love it!
