Alrighty then… ENOUGH with the politics. Let’s get back to REALITY!

In 2006 I wrote and recorded a spectacularly crappy demo of this tune. I was just starting out then in Garage Band---didn't even know about Logic yet---and had no idea what I was doing! I’ve always wanted to revisit this one, as its theme is one that is very close to my heart. I re-recorded it from scratch in 2022.

When I initially wrote this, I was grieving for the loss of an old friend, who had passed about a decade or so before. We'd met in High School, and had many adventures together on the streets in the USA, and in northern Mexico.

His name was Tim Ring. He was a good man who cared deeply for others, and worked too damn hard. He lost his life in an automobile accident while driving home exhausted after a full day of serving others.

Over the years I've lost so many friends and loved ones. Many of you have also experienced this kind of loss. If you haven't yet, you surely will sooner or later.

The line each one of us is standing in keeps getting shorter. It's a sobering thought...

Be well all!

Lyrics
GOOD MAN DOWN

I.
I remember when I first met you.
It was in Study Hall, when we were only teens.
You criticized my clothing, and I thought:
“Who does this fool think he is?!?”

Little did I know right then that soon
we'd become so very tight;
laughing and chasing away our fears, on
starry desert party nights.
Yeah...

II.
You were the first to hear the call,
and to do a complete about-face.
I followed soon after.
We were caught up in
Divine frenzy's sweet embrace.

We did Mexico together.
Just like two rabbits on the run.
Playing at matters far beyond our ken,
under the hot southwestern sun.

CHORUS:
But time and chance and distance,
ate away at our brotherly bond.
You went your way and I went mine,
and the years, they kept rolling on.
Every now and then I'd get news of you,
through a mutual friend.
I always believed you'd still be there waiting,
just around the bend.

III.
Recently I thought about you,
and how we'd once been such close friends.
It made me want to reconnect, and rekindle,
what once upon a time had been.

But you fell asleep at the wheel,
and on that dark and fatal night;
you left us all here in the land of the dying,
---stepped into eternal Light.

CHORUS:
Time and chance and distance,
ate away at our brotherly bond.
We were laid waste by distraction and responsibility,
till our opportunity was gone.
But now and then I still think of you;
my brother, my dear friend.
And I believe I will see you someday,
just around the bend.
Just around the bend.

Very nice Mike.  The sadness is portrayed beautifully in the lyrics and tone of your voice.  The music reflects the words.  We all had friends that we lost touch of.  Often I wonder what they are doing or if they are still with us.

Matt,
Thanks for the nice comment.
Although this song is intensely personal the subject is universal and timeless.
Makes me think of something written around 2000 B.C. in the epic of Gilgamesh. When his wild friend Enkidu dies, the inconsolable Gilgamesh cries out:
"My friend, who I loved, has turned to clay..."
Such pain never really leaves us. We have to learn to live with it... For me this song is therapeutic...

Thanks Bernardo!
On the one hand, it's a bit sad that one CAN relate to this subject; but on the other hand it IS an inescapable fact of life. Glad you stopped by and enjoyed the music my friend!
Be well!

You put yourself out there totally in your songs , with conviction and vulnerability.  A musical diary of the human experience.

Thank you Joyce...
Seems to me the best songs draw on experience, or at least deep conviction. I try to stick as close to that as I can. As to experience... the more universal the better... usually.
I appreciate very much your friendship and support!

We are at a moment in history where lot of populations are tired of politics and hence they are attracted by extremisms. I think it will surely be the case in France in few years...
Very nice song Mike.

Seemed like the first part of your comment was for "Lemmings" rather than for this song... but that's OK!
